Volume 5, #6, June 2019
Editor: Alan De Angelo
Greetings from the Soggy Midwest,
5/19/19 Solon Springs, WI, just south of Duluth.
Rain, rain, go away, come again another day. We have been getting soaked as downpour after downpour has rolled through. It was the wettest May on record with 8.25″ falling. We cannot even mow our lawns due to the saturation of the soil. And, to top it all off, it has been cool. I tried to go crappie fishing in north MN 5/19-5/26 and on the way up, we had a blizzard while driving just south of Duluth, MN. Three inches of snow fell, on May 19th! We then proceeded to have days of strong NNE winds and, you guessed it, rain. Miserable. The crappies remained safe!
Did you see issue #300 of BB? What a milestone for the ACA! If you haven’t yet read it, download it today and take a gander. It is chock full of wonderful articles by guys like Dick Stratton, Al Klee, Paul Loiselle, Tim Hovanec and … me! That little ditty about zebra danios was written in 1978, that’s 41 years ago. I was just a young pup back then being 23 years old and was already making my foray out into the world of aquatic journalism. I have written numerous articles for BB since then and now, the AN. I also wrote many articles for the Pacific Coast Cichlid Association (PCCA) when Kurt Zadnik was the Editor of the CICHLIDAE communiqué. Soon after, I found myself writing a fair number of articles for and edited The Apistogram, the periodical of the the Apistogramma Study Group. But enough about me, let’s turn the discussion to you. As you can see with the presence of a few shorter articles in BB 300, you do not need to write long scientific masterpieces to be published in BB. Actually, shorter articles come in quite handy for Editors as they allow a number of topics to be covered. Set your experiences to print, whether you want to explain about water-quality, home-made filtration, buildout of a fishroom, constructing tank stands, lighting, foods, experiences like Rusty Wessel’s Ross Socolof story, or any experiences with breeding your cichlids or an Index-type article like Josh Cunningham’s, send it in. Daryl Hutchins, our esteemed Editor, will help you with anything too. Just send it in. You even get paid for it! Lastly, this is not a men’s club either. Ladies, you can submit your experiences, too. BB is an equal-opportunity magazine. Send your submissions to Daryl Hutchins at: email@example.com.
In case you have been living under a rock, or spending your time in a large clay flowerpot, it’s almost time for the ACA Convention in Cromwell, CT. There is still time to make your reservations and register for the cichlid event of the year! For the best weekend of fish, friends and fun, be sure to get there. The Awards Banquet is always great and the menu looks delicious, too!
It’s that time again. If you would like to help steer the ACA on its future course, send a short bio to me at ACANEWSLTR@gmail.com. If you are unsure what a BOT member does, feel free to speak with any of them that are attending the convention or drop any of them, or me, an email. Although I am the official Elections Chair, Daryl Hutchins is my footrest, so you can contact him as well.
