Greetings and post-convention salutations!
From all reports, the Convention was a great success. As usual, everyone had a great time, met up with friends old and new, acquired new fish and learned tons of information at the seminars. What’s not to like? A special thank you to the entire crew at NECA for hosting the event. Also, a special thank you to all of the sponsors who supported not only the Convention but the ACA as an organization throughout the year.
If you haven’t heard, next year’s Convention will be in Sacramento, CA. You West Coast folks will be happy to hear that, I’m sure. Look for announcements to be made on FB and in future issues of the AN and BB about this event.
The ACA BOT elections will be soon upon us (15 September). Please remember to vote. I believe that last year only 27% of our membership voted. That’s fairly abysmal if you ask me. It’s a few mouse-clicks and a press of the Send Button to do it. Please take the time to read our candidates’ bios and vote for who you think would best represent you in the ACA.
BOT ELECTION PROCEDURES
Speaking of elections, I and Daryl Hutchins are also the Election Coordinators for the ACA. Looking at the By-Laws, we see that some improvements need to be made, especially since we no longer rely upon snail-mail to do the job. Going digital has brought speed into the equation and that allows us to streamline the process. We will be revamping Section lX of the By-Laws over the next few weeks and proposing some much-needed changes. The digital process also allows us to use third-party resources, we no longer need to physically count and store the ballots. Thank you Daryl for delving into that stuff. I happily defer any tech stuff to him. (IT Dept. note: the entire process is now being conducted on electionrunner.com. Among other things, this means voting is completely and [most importantly] demonstrably anonymous.)
Let’s not talk about fish for a moment. “What? No Fish?” Yep, other animals and stuff. I am in contact with a lot of other cichlid keepers and many of you have interests outside of fish. Besides dogs and cats, a great number of you breed birds, goats, sheep, cattle, mini cows, horses, unusual chickens, heritage breed pigs, pheasants, poison arrow frogs, herps, you name it. Others raise carnivorous plants, orchids, succulents, bromeliads, air plants, etc. in the moist environments of the fish room. I have a good friend who raised ostriches, too. Add to that live foods and it’s quite a conglomeration of interests. We are a “unique” bunch of people. So, if you are ever worried that if you attend a fish meeting or convention and will have nothing to talk about … you are in for a big surprise. And, a great many of us are anglers, too. But then, that would be talking about fish again.

Have a great day!
