Greetings and Salutations!
Well, the Aquatic Experience, Chicago was a resounding success with an approximated 30% more foot traffic than last year. The ACA had a great-looking booth there and a fair number of members stopped by the booth to say “Hello!”and even more than I expected worked it.
Well, the Aquatic Experience, Chicago was a resounding success with an approximated 30% more foot traffic than last year. The ACA had a great-looking booth there and a fair number of members stopped by the booth to say “Hello!”and even more than I expected worked it.
I arrived on Saturday morning to find Mo Devlin, Mike Schadle, Mary Finnstrom and Paul Loiselle already manning it. Later Phil and Jan Benes arrived. Also dropping by were Rusty Wessel, Steve Lundblad, Chuck and Carol Rambo, Steve Edie, Art Parola, Oliver Lucanus, the GCCA contingent Keith Knapp and Shawn Kopinski and a host of others.
Perhaps the best part of the AE was the chance to get to talk to so many people that I haven’t had time to meet before. In 45 years of ACA membership, I never sat and talked with Steve Edie and never met Jan Benes. I had ample opportunity to do both while manning the booth. It was great fun. As usual, I and Mike Schadle reminisced about the “good old days” and people we have known and lost touch with while discussing so many other things as well. Speaking of people we have known, the presence of Ray Kingfish Lucas was sorely missed. Maybe next year, Ray.
The AE is a must-do for those of you who have yet to attend it. An article and photographs about the show will be appearing in BB. Remember, next year the ACA will be sanctioning a 250-tank cichlid show at the AE. Make plans to attend and bring your show fish, too. It is your chance to help us bring the cichlid hobby to a great many people.
Before I forget, there were two things that intrigued me at the AE. First, Cobalt Aquatics has come out with a round-bottomed plastic bag. What a simple and great idea. I know that I have lost numerous small fish after they had gotten wedged into the corner of a bag or the folds of a tied corner. The round-bottomed bag should prevent many losses of fry and smaller fishes.
Also, Reef to Rainforest Media had a book on the History and Husbandry of the Bangaii Cardinalfish. Yes, I know it is a marine species but if there was ever a marine fish that wanted to be a cichlid, it’s the Bangaii. They are mouthbrooders that care for their eggs and fry just like our beloved cichlids. I bought the book, hardcover, of course. I just need to get a new fishroom set up. Sigh! So many fish, so little tank space.
